Thoughts on Ministry

Over the next few weeks I will share with you selected chapters from a work in progress. Counting the time I spent as an intern in Calhoun, GA, and the 2 1/2 years I interned with the Church of Christ in Bay Minette, Alabama through today, May 13, 2010, I have spent most of my life in ministry a total of 24 years.  This experience includes Youth Ministry, Worship Leader (although at the time I the congregation called this position a paid song leader), Associate Ministry, and Preaching Ministry for the last 16 years.  In that time I have experience working in congregations that fit the following categories:  Small (less than 100), Medium (100-200), Larger (200 – 350), stagnate, growing, adjusting, and everything in between.  I have had the privilege of working with congregations that remodeled older buildings or built new ones while I was with them.  At some of these places there were moments of conflict and seasons of peace, times of struggle and times of joy.  I have participated in and lead mission campaigns to Scotland, Guyana, Honduras, and South Georgia.  Adventures on some of these excursions blessed my life, and others I do not want to repeat. I am sharing my experience with you in this blog because these experiences are the voices and background for a book that I am writing on ministry.  The book is in very rough form and may never see the light of publication.  Do we even need another book on “Ministry?”  However, if you will allow me indulgence, I will share with you a few of the chapters and thoughts that I think will be a part of this book.

As always not only to I welcome your thoughts and comments, but ask you to voice your opinion on the potential value of this material specifically to younger or less experienced ministers.

I plan to give you a chapter on Monday, May 17, 2010 covering the topic, “What is Ministry?” then a chapter all along as I write and edit.

Until then,
