God’s Concept of the Church

From notes hand-written in my Bible and now entered into Olive Tree Bible Reader on my iPad here is a bare-bones sermon outline on God’s Concept of the Church.

God’s Concept of the Church

God Has a Select People of His Own

  • 1 Peter 2:9
  • The Bible calls the people:

◦   His Kingdom – Matt 16:18

◦   His Flock – Acts 20:28

◦   His Body – Eph 1:22-23

◦   His Church – Eph 1:22-23

◦   If Body = Church Then Body of Christ = Church of Christ

◦   His Bride – Eph 5:32

◦   His Household – 1 Tim 3:15

These terms are singular

  • The Church is singular – Eph 5:23
  • The Church is not just a group of Good people – Matt 7:21-23

◦   Can be good / religious and not saved – Rom 10:1

◦   Can be very religious and very wrong – Acts 17:22, 30

◦   Not about keeping the Old Law but about following Christ – Gal 5:4

God says how one can belong to this group – 1 Pet 2:10

  • Faith – Jn 8:24
  • Repentance – Acts 3:19
  • Confession – Rom 10:9-10
  • Calling on the name of the Lord  – Acts 22:16;  1 Pet 3:20-21

The Way God planned from the beginning of Christ’s Church – Acts 2:14-39.

You can fill in the details.

  1. Good notes! I’ve been teaching a class on Philippians at Gulf Breeze on Wed. nights, and last night we talked about Philippians 2:12-13. These verses I think are most often used to talk about individual salvation but in the context Paul is talking to the corporate not the individual. And it is there that he says “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Lots of interesting things to discuss there, but I most pertinent to this discussion is that God is at work in his church. Paul has just come off of this big idea of a selfless spiritual family, and has used Christ as the perfect example of humility, and so when he comes here and says we have to be working toward that spiritual health, he knows it’s a BIG calling. But we’re not in it alone – God is at work! And I think THAT is why it ought to produce “fear and trembling.” If we know that God is energizing us to produce the kind of church that he desires, then our failure can only occur when we are actually working against his energizing power! We essentially have to be rejecting or at least ignoring his work in our family. If we can just lay aside our pride and realize we can’t do it alone, and really let God energize us to do his work (and even to will to do it) just imagine what our churches can do for the cause of Christ!

Anyway, just a thought since we had studied this topic last night! 🙂

  2. Hi Scott

God choice of physical Israel and us being spiritual Israel, thus continuing the choice, is a good thought too. You can use Deuteronomy 7.6-10 and Galatians 6.16/3.26-29.

I’ll probably read your blog more now since I started using Google Reader. It’s pretty cool.
