When We Hear the Word “Mission”

God’s Mission

• In Creation – Gen 1:1-2
• In Redemption – Eph 3:9-12
• Make Himself Known
  • Ps 19:1
  • Rom 1:19-20

God’s Mission in Man

(Man’s Mission) from Creation

• Gen 1:28; 2:15
  • Fill the earth, rule the earth
  • Care for creation
  • Know and trust (have faith in) God (Gen 2:15-16)
  • Have Fellowship with God – Gen 3:8-9
• Man messed up!

God’s Mission in Israel (Israel’s Mission)

• Began with Abram – Gen 12:2-3
• Repeated in Ps 96:1-6
• Proclaimed in the Prophets – Isa 12:4-5
• Their Mission: To introduce the world around them to God.
• Note how God uses Israel in Egypt to make Himself Known
  • Exodus 7:5, 14
  • 8:10
  • 9:14, 16
  • 12:12
  • 14:18
  • So that Egypt and the World may know . . .

God’s Mission with Jesus (Jesus Mission)

• 2 Cor 5:19 – reconciliation
• Jn 14:9-11 – That disciples (Hebrews) would see the Father
• 2 Cor 4:4-6 – so that all could know God

God’s Mission for the Church (Our Mission)

• 1 Tim 2:3-4 – God does not long for anyone to spend eternity in torment.
• Jn 17:20-21, 25, 26 – Jesus’ prayer is for all the world to know Him and God.
• Our mission is to continue God’s mission to declare God to the world.
  • So that they might know Him.
  • So that they might obey Him.
