Anticipation

The phenomenon actually began weeks if not months ago.  Students and teachers alike began counting the days until  Summer Break.  This morning, I asked Andrew (age 12 / grade  7th) what he was looking forward to about school being out  for the summer.  He had a number of answers, but two stood  out.
  1. I won’t have to be around certain students who can’t keep  their mouth’s shut and get us all in trouble.
  2. Freedom! No more school work!

I have to admit, the apple does not fall far from the tree.  These are the same reasons I looked forward to Summer  Break when I was in Junior High.  What about you?

As I drove in to the study, I could not help but make a  comparison to our plight in this life and our future anticipation of Heaven.  Paul writes,

For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened–not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. (2Co 4:17-5:7) – ESV.

I look forward to the day when I am away from all the harshness in the world and can be eternally with my God and Savior!

Amen?

  1. Amen. I actually preached a sermon on that text just a few weeks ago. Called it, “Looking Toward Home” or something like that. Now I miss having a summer break…

    • Daniel,
I would like a copy of that sermon on Looking Toward Home. Sounds like a great topic / idea. I have a sermon idea or two on the text at hand, but one that stands out in my memory is one that focuses on the idea of being homeless (living in a tent city) and longing for the day when you can move to a permanent structure.
